[WASHINGTON] The decision to shelve the huge Nord Stream 2 pipeline project will "relieve Russia's geostrategic chokehold over Europe through supply of natural gas," a senior US official said on Tuesday.
The official told reporters that stopping Nord Stream 2, which is meant to funnel gas to Germany, is "a major turning point in the world's energy independence from Russia."
The "US$11 billion investment and a prized gas pipeline controlled by Russia... will now go to waste," the official said, calling the project President Vladimir "Putin's prized pipeline."
