THE Defence Ministry (Mindef) is building a new "city" that's roughly the size of Bishan town in the western part of Singapore that will allow soldiers to train in extremely realistic settings. The 88-hectare Safti City, as it is called, will cost around S$900 million to construct and it will take 10 years to complete, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen told Parliament on Friday.

The mega-facility comprises two sectors of extensive road networks and over 200 buildings. There will be both urban and conventional terrains. In the urban setting, there will be low-rise residences and taller buildings. The open terrain will feature jungles, hills and rivers.
