Taiwan July exports rise y-o-y, ending 17-month streak of falls

[TAIPEI] Taiwan's exports grew in July from a year earlier, ending 17 months of contraction, on stronger demand from China for electronics components and information and telecommunication products.
Exports rose 1.2 per cent from a year earlier, the first expansion on-year since January 2015, when exports rose 2.78 per cent, said the finance ministry.
A Reuters poll had forecast a 2.0 per cent slide for July.
The trade surplus for July was US$3.61 billion, compared with US$3.58 billion in June.
June's 2.1 per cent drop in exports was the smallest since the streak of contractions began in February 2015.
Taiwan's exports traditionally are bigger in the second half than in the first due to shipments of electronics items before Christmas.
