Tokyo: Stocks close up 0.75%, with Nikkei nearing 20,000 mark

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks rose 0.75 per cent on Thursday, thanks to a weaker yen, with the benchmark Nikkei index approaching the psychologically important 20,000 level last seen in 2000.
The Nikkei 225 added 147.91 points to 19,937.72 while the Topix index of all first-section issues gained 0.36 per cent, or 5.72 points, to 1,594.19.
