Two Singapore MPs seek updates on electoral boundaries committee's formation

SINGAPOREANS could get a clearer idea of when the next General Election (GE) might take place when parliament sits again on Monday.

Two MPs, Arthur Fong of the ruling People's Action Party and Yee Jenn Jong of the opposition Workers' Party, intend to ask Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong if the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) has been formed.

The committee reviews and draws up the boundaries for election, and its formation will be a significant sign that polls are imminent. The next GE must be held by January 2017, although many expect it to happen in the next few months.

According to the order paper for Monday's sitting, Mr Fong, an MP for West Coast GRC, will also ask the prime minister about the guidelines that the EBRC will follow.

Mr Yee, a non-constituency MP, wants to know the names of those in the committee. He will also ask when the committee's report will be published, and for the likely duration from the report's publication to the calling of the GE.

Mr Fong's and Mr Yee's questions are the first of 88 that have been submitted for oral answer. A further 29 are due for written answer.
