UK, EU said to be closing in on Brexit deal, but both sides warn they are 'still far apart' on key stumbling blocks


THE European Union and the United Kingdom have begun their ninth and final round of trade negotiations and at last there are serious hopes for a Brexit deal.

European negotiators indicated that they would write a joint trade agreement text with the UK, according to a leak to The Times' Brussels correspondent.

The latest "sherpa" talks began on Tuesday and the two chief negotiators - Michel Barnier of the EU and David Frost of the UK - are scheduled to meet on Friday.
