US to impose UN sanctions 'snap back' on Iran: Trump
[WASHINGTON] President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had authorised Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to activate a controversial mechanism aimed at reimposing UN sanctions on Iran.
The move escalates a diplomatic spat with European allies on the United Nations Security Council that will have huge repercussions for the Iran nuclear deal.
"Today I'm directing the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, to notify the UN Security Council that the United States intends to restore virtually all of the previously suspended United Nations sanctions on Iran," Mr Trump told reporters.
