US mid-term polls could decide GOP's future
THE Republican Party in the US - known as the Grand Old Party (GOP) - is facing an existential crisis, and next year's mid-term elections could well determine whether the party still has a strong future, or sinks along with former president Donald Trump.
After allowing US President Joe Biden some time to settle into the hot seat in January, Republicans in Congress have recently revealed a two-pronged opposition strategy by demoting former House of Representatives leader Liz Cheney and blockading the Democrats' infrastructure bill.
It is a combination of the new (Trump loyalism, or at least Trumpism) and the old (fiscal conservatism).
