WP's Sylvia Lim wants reassurance on independence of organs of state amid Lee saga

SYLVIA Lim, chairman of opposition Workers' Party (WP), asked for reassurance that the independence of organs of state will remain intact amidst the Lee family saga, during the parliamentary debate on Monday.
In particular, she questioned the appointment of the Attorney-General (AG) Lucien Wong, who was known to be "a senior partner in the law firm as law minister for a long time", and was personal lawyer to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the dispute over 38 Oxley Road.

She said: "There is no legal prohibition on appointing government's close friends and former party comrades as the AG or deputy AG."
However, Ms Lim questioned whether such appointments would instil public confidence over the Attorney-General Chamber's independence.
