THE art market went on a roller-coaster ride in 2016.

The year saw highs including auction records for artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Claude Monet - and lows such as a drop in auction sales in London and New York. There were many tense moments in between, too.

Both Sotheby's and Christie's were entangled in a money-laundering investigation surrounding Malaysian businessman Jho Low. Neither auction house was accused of any wrongdoing and Mr Low's family has been fighting the claims. A Pablo Picasso sculpture ignited a bitter fight between powerful members of the royal family of Qatar…
