Berita Harian launches campaign to support Singapore's halal eateries hit by pandemic

MALAY newspaper Berita Harian (BH) has launched Berita Harian SoSedap, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign that aims to spread awareness of how local halal eateries require the continued support of the community, as well as to drive business to both big and small halal food and beverage (F&B) operators.

This campaign seeks to support Singapore's halal eateries whose livelihoods have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Malay and Muslim community, as well as the public at large, can share their favourite halal hawkers, cafes and restaurants on the Berita Harian SoSedap webpage until Oct 18.

These halal eateries will then be added to the Berita Harian Halal Food Map, which will allow readers to locate and explore halal eateries closest to them in real time on their smartphone, wherever they are in Singapore.

The Berita Harian Halal Food Map allows users to discover halal food near to them with just a single tap. Users can tap on the eateries listed and then decide which ones to explore and support.

The campaign hopes to help people such as 49-year-old Dewi, who is the owner of Liza Nasi Padang located in Toa Payoh Lorong 7. Madam Dewi is a mother of two and the sole breadwinner of the family.

She is also supporting her husband who is recovering from a severe stroke.

Similarly, Sumadi, 53, is determined to keep his family business of 48 years afloat. He is the owner of Warong Pak Sapari at Adam Road Food Centre.

He said: "Here, hawker culture is part of the community. Some of my customers, even during this period, are still willing to order takeaways."

Saat Abdul Rahman, editor of BH, said: "The pandemic has severely affected the eateries across Singapore, who have had to bear the effects of the numerous restrictions placed on dining throughout the course of this crisis. As part of the Malay/Muslim community, BH believes that it is our responsibility to help our local halal eateries, and we hope that this campaign will contribute to their recovery."
