BREAST Cancer Foundation (BCF) raised over $250,000 through its seventh Tee for Pink Charity Golf event held last Thursday at the newly-redesigned Tampines course at Tanah Merah Country Club.

The donations were matched dollar for dollar by Tote Board.

Despite the challenges in organising a golf tournament this year, the event was met with an overwhelming response and flights were sold out.

This event came after World Health Organization's recent announcement that breast cancer has overtaken lung cancer to become the most occurring cancer globally.

Incidence of breast cancer diagnosis has also more than tripled in Singapore over the last 40 years, according to Singapore's cancer registry.

BCF president Staphnie Tang said the experiential golf tournament also aims to raise awareness amongst golf participants, and to let them know that "breast cancer is more than a woman's problem".

Men's champion Kevin Liau said: "A man's well-being is intertwined with the well-being of his mother, his wife, his sisters and his daughters. Being the father of two daughters, their health is of course of paramount importance to me."

BCF focuses primarily on championing for early detection, providing subsidies to mammogram screenings to low-income women and supporting those affected by breast cancer.

"When it hits, it affects all. Men play a vital role to their wives, mothers, partners, children or siblings to encourage them to go for their mammogram screenings as well as to do their routine self-examinations," Ms Tang said.

"The support of men is indeed key in normalising talking about breast cancer so that we can save more lives," she added.
