Coronavirus fears thin out the Fat Tuesday crowds in Venice

With a shortened Carnival and few revellers at Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, the city of Venice is reeling from the gloom in tourism

Tourists who have remained in Venice have replaced their traditional Carnival masks with protective masks and the city's pharmacies have quickly run out of their limited supplies.


DURING Carnival, Venice is typically at its most packed and wildest. The narrow streets teem with revellers, hotels are fully booked, it's tough to get a table in the better restaurants, and vendors sell countless masks, gondolier hats, and statuettes of the city's distinctive...
