How managers can address staff's mental health in Covid-19 crisis (Covid-19 Mental Health video series)
Welcome to Episode 2 of The Business Times' Covid-19 Executive Mental Health video series.
In this episode, Singapore-based psychologist Maria Micha, who has over 20 years of experience counseling executives and individuals, looks at how managers and leaders can help ensure the mental well-being of their staff.
One of the things she notes during this crisis is that many people suffer from low-level anxiety and depression - but they're unaware of it. As a manager, you could watch out for signs of anxiety and depression among your staff by noting changes in their work behaviour and general presentation - even if it's via video conferencing calls.
She also suggests that managers check in on their staff once in a while, perhaps by conducting Zoom calls where they can speak candidly about their various worries and stresses without being penalised.
A possible low-cost idea is to engage a counselor to conduct simple webinars addressing large groups of staff on how they can maintain their psychological well-being during these uncertain times.
Another good but not so low-cost idea is to send a care package to their homes to show them you care.
