IT happened right before this journalist's very eyes from 15 metres away at Farrer Park. That was back in 1973, only days before Singapore's first hosting of the South-east Asia Peninsular Games.

On the cinder track, a peloton of cyclists, including ace rider Roland Lim, crashed into one another while manoeuvring a tight corner. The sextet were lucky to escape with cuts and abrasions with a pair suffering joint injuries. Subsequently, there were calls, citing safety, for building a velodrome.
