THIS year's Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) will once again be held in a hybrid format, with in-person races taking place on the weekend of Dec 4-5 at The Float @ Marina Bay.

On Wednesday (Nov 3), the organisers also announced that a virtual race grand finale will take place from Dec 1 to Dec 12.

The total number of participants for the 2-day in-person grand finale will be no more than 4,000. They must be either fully vaccinated or have a valid negative pre-event test result for the duration of the event.

Those who are fully vaccinated must also undergo a self-administered antigen rapid test on the day of their run.

The participants will also be spread out over 4 sessions of a thousand people each. They can take part in three categories - the 5km and 10km runs, and the Toyota Ekiden in teams of 4.

"Participants will once again be able to run through Marina Bay in a display of strength and unity that celebrates Singapore's resilience amid the global pandemic," the organisers said in a press release.

While there will be no road closures for the event, prevailing safe management measures will be in place to safeguard the health and safety of all participants.

Those who want to be part of the grand finale celebration, but prefer to run at a time and route of their preference, can sign up for the virtual races - featuring the 5km, 10km, half-marathon, kids 1.5km and kids 3km runs.

There will also be a virtual marathon challenge held in November where registered participants can complete the full marathon distance of 42.195km over multiple sessions.

Jeff Edwards, the managing director of Asia for SCSM organisers The Ironman Group, said the uncertainty of the pandemic meant the race will be carried out in a hybrid format.

"This prioritises the health and well-being of participants, community, supporters, and employees while still delivering an exciting event experience for all," he said.

This year's SCSM is also a landmark one as it marks 20 years of collaboration with Standard Chartered as the event's title sponsor.

Patrick Lee, the cluster chief executive officer of Singapore and Asean markets at Standard Chartered, said: "Sports also foster unity, which is needed especially in such times, and SCSM is an important community event. While the goal is to stage the best race possible, our priority is the health and safety of runners, supporters and the community."
