A VIRTUAL photo exhibition has been launched to commemorate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Singapore.

The US Embassy in Singapore said the showcase, From Sea to Shining Sea, features a total of 55 photos from SPH Media Limited, the embassy, the National Library Board, former diplomats, and other contributors.

The title of the exhibition is a line from the song America the Beautiful, which the embassy said reflects the bilateral relations that have developed and deepened over the years.

The exhibition features a rendition of this song produced by 3 Singaporean musicians.

All 55 photos featured highlight the friendship, cooperation, and partnership between the 2 countries since they established diplomatic relations on Apr 4, 1966, less than 8 months after Singapore became an independent nation.

Among the selected photos show Singapore's late founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew's visit to the White House to meet then-US president Ronald Reagan in 1985, and American boxer Muhammad Ali waving to the crowd after 2 exhibition bouts at the newly constructed National Stadium in Kallang in 1973.

There is also a photo taken in 1960 when the San Francisco Ballet performed at the Victoria Theatre, an event described as Singapore's "cultural event of the year".

The picture shows 5 members of the Ballet posing at Queen Elizabeth Walk, with the former Fullerton Building (now Fullerton Hotel) in the background.

A more recent picture shows US Vice-President Kamala Harris at the Istana in August this year admiring an orchid named in her honour as part of her first official visit to Singapore.

The exhibition also features a collection of personal photos taken by former US diplomat George Porter, who was based at the embassy in Singapore as a public relations officer from 1965 to 1970.

US Charge d'Affaires Rafik Mansour described the partnership with Singapore as a "top priority" for the US.

"The past 55 years of partnership are just the beginning. As we look back and celebrate 55 years of diplomatic ties, cultural exchanges, partnerships, and most importantly, friendship, we also look forward to many more good years ahead," he said.

Access to the virtual exhibition is free for all, and can be viewed at www.ussg55inphotos.com.
