Is the '996' work culture the way to go in Singapore?
Hard work should not be demonised - but neither should it be put on the altar at the expense of everything else
CHINESE billionaire and co-founder of Alibaba Group Jack Ma faced a backlash when he voiced support for the infamous "996". No, it is not a symbol of the end times, but refers instead to the infamous 12-hours a day, six-days-a-week work culture rampant in China's tech sector.
Employees must put in longer hours if they want to succeed, and those who don't subscribe to this philosophy "won't taste the happiness and rewards of hard work", he had declared.
Expectedly, netizens were up in arms, denouncing his views as draconian and exploitative.
