Ah, the taste of Chablis and Pouilly-Fuisse

While both are very age-worthy budget white burgundies, the latter has the advantage of being drinkable even when young, says NK YONG

IT may seem somewhat of a downgrade to include Chablis in a discussion of budget burgundies, but Chablis is a white burgundy and the commercial reality is that top Chablis are among the best value-for-money buys in white burgundy. The top Chablis are like the top wines of the Cote d'Or; difficult to find, and quite expensive relative to other Chablis.

But leaving aside the very top ones, there are innumerable good to very fine Chablis at affordable prices. Nonetheless, among local wine lovers though, and I stress "local", it is a rare occasion to be served a Chablis at dinner!

Chablis is the northernmost appellation of Burgundy, which may explain why it tends to escape the attention of burgundy...
