Ah, the taste of Chablis and Pouilly-Fuisse
While both are very age-worthy budget white burgundies, the latter has the advantage of being drinkable even when young, says NK YONG
IT may seem somewhat of a downgrade to include Chablis in a discussion of budget burgundies, but Chablis is a white burgundy and the commercial reality is that top Chablis are among the best value-for-money buys in white burgundy. The top Chablis are like the top wines of the Cote d'Or; difficult to find, and quite expensive relative to other Chablis.
But leaving aside the very top ones, there are innumerable good to very fine Chablis at affordable prices. Nonetheless, among local wine lovers though, and I stress "local", it is a rare occasion to be served a Chablis at dinner!
Chablis is the northernmost appellation of Burgundy, which may explain why it tends to escape the attention of burgundy seekers. Curious to learn more about Chablis early in my Burgundy learning curve some 25 years ago, I visited Chablis and sought out a few of the top producers. Chablis is a small town, its best hotel there being Hostellerie des Clos whose restaurant we found to be quite good then - and judging from the Michelin Guide, it still is!
