Shen Nu (The Goddess) A Silent Film Concert: Instead of buying tickets to another noisy Hollywood 3D blockbuster, why not watch a silent film from China's cinematic golden age for a change? As part of the 2014 Chinese Festival of Arts, the Esplanade is presenting a notable classic, The Goddess, which prominent Chinese director hails as one of the best films made in the 1930s. First released in 1934 and directed by Wu Yong Gang, it tells the story of a mother's selfless love for her son. To make ends meet, the mother, played by legendary silent film actress Ruan Lingyu in one of her last roles, has to work as a prostitute.
The Singapore Chinese Orchestra led by Cultural Medallion 2013 recipient Tsung Yeh, will score The Goddess with music specially written by established composer Law Wai Lun and Hong Kong's Lincoln Lo.
