Art competition in support of BT Budding Artists Fund
Charity arts organisation TRCL kicks off its inaugural visual arts prize for youths in Singapore.
Singapore
NOT-FOR-PROFIT arts organisation TRCL launched its inaugural youth visual arts competition on Tuesday in support of The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF).
Initiated in 2004 and adopted by The Business Times (BT) in 2005, the fund has since reached out to more than 20,000 financially disadvantaged children and youth through art camps, workshops and signature events.
Chairperson of the 13-19 Art Prize advisory committee and board member of TRCL Genii Koh said: "We are delighted to have the support of The Business Times on a project which nurtures and recognises young talents."
The competition offers youths aged 13 to 19 in Singapore an opportunity to express themselves through canvas and digital artworks.
Tan See Kia, member of the competition's advisory committee and head of the Junior Art Department, School of Young Talents at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), said that the competition "fills a gap in the visual art landscape particularly for teenagers".

It is also a "good opportunity to share their perspectives and showcase their artistic accomplishments".
TRCL called for registrations and submission of artworks in a press release, extending the invitation to youths in secondary schools, international schools, art schools and institutions, and tertiary institutions.
A panel comprising local artists and art professionals will judge submissions based on concept, creativity and originality, aesthetic quality and technical skills.
Four categories of winners will be recognised and rewarded: gold winners will receive S$800 each, silver winners will receive S$600 each, and bronze winners S$400 each.
The Jury Prize will be awarded to artworks deserving of special mention, and winners will each receive S$400.
Winning artworks will be announced later this year on Dec 8 and put up for public exhibition. They will then be auctioned to the public online and proceeds from the sale will go towards the BT BAF.
Editor of The Business Times and board member of TRCL Wong Wei Kong shared his hopes that "through this competition, young visual art students will be empowered knowing their talents are given visibility".
"Through the use of their talent, they also have the power to help those in need," he said in a statement.
Ms Koh added that the fundraising aspect of the competition will help young artists "realise that their pursuit of creativity can benefit other young persons in the community".
The submissions deadline for the competition is Nov 19, and artists can submit their canvas artworks to the submission centre; digital artworks may be submitted through the competition's online portal.
