Korean TV on the move
COUCH potatoes, sit up straight - but just for a while. Following on Netflix's productivity-killing heels is the over-the-top (OTT) multi-screen video service Viu, which has been available in Singapore since Jan 11.
Launched by Hong Kong-based PCCW Media Group, Viu caters to those who just can't get enough of Korean dramas and variety shows. By securing a pan-regional deal with SBS, KBS, MBC, and CJ E&M, the top four Korean broadcasters, the streaming app offers the widest range of popular shows such as variety show Running Man, reality show 2 Days & 1 Night, and newly released romantic drama Descendants of the Sun.
Managing director of PCCW Janice Lee said: "Korean, Taiwanese, and Chinese TV is very popular in Asia. According to a survey we commissioned, 53 to 80 per cent of online media viewers watch Korean content. We decided to lead with Asian content, and we'll add more localised videos for each of the markets in time."
