New platform for young shutterbugs

LYN Low photographs her immediate family members and relatives. But the photos are never happy ones of people smiling and posing for the camera. Instead, she captures their private sorrows and disappointments. An image of a relative's head of white hair represents the schizophrenia and depression he suffers from; a shot of an exposed stomach with scars suggests the pain of another relative dealing by cancer.

When a young girl Low knew lost her milk tooth, Low photographed the tooth as a reminder of our inevitable physical transformation and mortality. There's a wide-eyed, vulnerable quality to the image of the tooth - it's as if the girl had taken the photograph herself.

Low admits: "I'm surrounded by suffering at home. So I've become very sensitive to it ... Each of these images are emotional responses to past incidents in my life, but only I know the whole story behind them. My only hope is that they can stir certain emotions in the viewer and trigger a moment of contemplation - even if the viewer doesn't know the whole story."
