IN A 4,000 square foot art studio in Rotterdam, surrounded by paint buckets amid tables heavily stained with splatters of acrylic paint and hundreds of pieces of unfinished work, Zhuang Hong Yi, a 53-year-old Chinese artist pauses thoughtfully over his latest "flower bed" collection. "I can stay in my studio all day working, looking at this work, touching this object or that sculpture," he says.

This is all part and parcel of Zhuang's preparation for Spectrum, his first solo exhibition at Singapore's Redsea Gallery which runs from Sept 24 to Oct 31.

This exhibition showcases more than 20 three-dimensional sculptural paintings that stunningly combine traditional Chinese motifs with a contemporary abstract aesthetic. He designed five to six works in the Flower Field series for his Singapore show.
