Seeking the extraordinary

FOR adventure film-maker Bryan Smith, the term "occupational hazard" takes on a whole new meaning. But that's not unexpected for a job that involves trekking next to an active volcano, kayaking down violent river rapids, or scaling tall vertical rock formations.

However, Smith begs to differ, because although his work looks dangerous, the risks are very carefully calculated.

"You might be uncomfortable in the mountains in those environments, but that's a place where we've spent a lot of time," says the 39-year-old who works for National Geographic.
