Youthful jaunt with a twist

Life suddenly happens for a jaded older couple who meet their 2.0 versions.

FORTY-SOMETHINGS Josh and Cornelia have a pretty good life, or so it would seem: a group of like-minded friends to hang out with and a contented-if-slightly-mundane existence in Brooklyn, unfettered by children or the need to have them. Suddenly their world view is rocked when they meet Jamie and Darby, a couple who possess youth, the confidence that comes with it and the refreshing ability to ignore established social norms.

Writer-director Noah Baumbach proved to be an astute observer of intergenerational conflict in movies such as The Squid and the Whale (2005) and Greenberg (2010). His latest endeavour, While We're Young, explores relationships as well as what it's like to be "in the moment" from the perspective of a character whose "moment" may have passed.

Not coincidentally, Baumbach is an indie filmmaker who is having his own moment in the space previously reserved for Woody Allen, served well by a satirical Left Coast sensibility and a knack for dialogue commonly inflicted by a certain species of neurotic New Yorker.
