ONE is a movie and music legend, the other is a master of Chinese calligraphy. Both are receiving the country's highest honour for the arts and culture, the Cultural Medallion, for their invaluable contributions to the arts scene.
Nona, 86, was a famous Malay entertainment figure from the 1940s to 1960s. She made her singing debut on Radio Malaya at the age of 16 and rose to become the singing voice behind several famous actresses in the musicals of P Ramlee. Though she withdrew from the scene at the age of 45, she continued to groom many young musicians such as Najip Ali and Rilla Melati, as well as her own sons, Iskandar and Indra Ismail. The late Iskandar won the Cultural Medallion in 2008.
