A classic that needs some updating
THE Esplanade has been the venue for many a wonderful dance performance, especially with its much-loved da:ns festival which has elevated the profile of dance in Singapore.
In its 15th year, on its "birthday" month no less, it presented the Stuttgart Ballet's iconic Romeo and Juliet by John Cranko. Conceptualised in 1962 during his second year as artistic director, the full-length piece has since become one of the company's signature pieces.
Cranko's lively choreography - with its modern quirky moves a refreshing departure from classical ballet - was still the highlight of the production; but overall though, the set and staging seemed dated and too static, and the unimaginative lighting didn't do much to enhance the dramaturgy.
