Chinese Folklore
The 7 Sages of the Bamboo Grove is a classic story in Chinese folklore about a group of seven scholar-artists who resisted the rise of the Jin Dynasty and paid a price for it. Singapore theatre company Toy Factory Productions has adapted the story and transposed it to a dystopian future where an omniscient organisation - known simply as the Organisation - polices the behaviour of every human being. Its suppression of free speech and artistic expression outrages seven artists, who attempt to overthrow the Organisation and change the future. This ambitious production stars Sharon Au and Nelson Chia.
7 Sages of the Bamboo Grove runs at the Esplanade Theatre on Jan 31 and Feb 1 at 8pm. Tickets from Sistic
