FIVE years ago, the Guggenheim Museum of New York acknowledged that its collection of 6,800 artworks was too Western-centric and that it needed to better reflect the range of art around the world. It found a partner in banking and financial services group UBS and subsequently started to acquire several works by the best artists from Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.

The first exhibition No Country: Contemporary Art For South And Southeast Asia was curated by Singapore's June Yap and showcased in New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. The second exhibition, centering on Latin American art, toured New York, Mexico City and London.

The third and last exhibition, focusing on Middle Eastern and North African art, is set to show at Shanghai's Rockbund Art Museum in April after its New York debut last year.
