Ballet Beauty
Helmi Yusof
Few fairy tale ballets have the pedigree of Sleeping Beauty. The 128-year-old classic was the first collaboration between French-Russian choreographer Marius Petipa and great Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who would later collaborate again on Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
When it premiered in 1890, Sleeping Beauty's complex choreography and opulent music made it an instant hit. This Singapore Dance Theatre's production features the original choreography and music, as well as a handsome staging by SDT artistic director Janek Schergen and gorgeous costumes by Tracy Grant Lord.
The ballet tells the story of a princess who is cursed to prick her finger on a spindle and sleep for perpetuity, unless someone can awaken her with a true love's kiss.
