Beauty and Brutality
Helmi Yusof
Named best Off-Broadway play in 2016 by The Village Voice, the funny and intelligent but brutal drama Guards At The Taj tells the story of friendship between two Imperial Guards of the newly-built Taj Mahal in India in 1648. On the eve of the Taj's opening, the two men are still forbidden to look upon its splendour - a royal decree that extends to punishing the 20,000 men who built the mausoleum.
The play written by Rajiv Joseph examines philosophical ideas of beauty, power and knowledge, while at same time drawing sympathetic flesh-and-blood characterisations of the two men. This Singapore Repertory Theatre production is directed by Jo Kukathas and stars Ghafir Akbar and Jay Saighal.
Guards At The Taj runs from Nov 14 to Dec 1, 2018, at KC Arts Centre - Home of SRT. Tickets from Sistic.
