Bedtime blues: Overcoming sleep apnoea
A GOOD night’s sleep isn’t a given, especially if you suffer from sleep apnoea – a condition where one’s breathing stops and starts several times during sleep, leaving one fatigued during the day even after many hours in bed.
It’s a condition that many Singaporeans lived with without knowing what was wrong with them. But that is finally changing, with sleep clinics at restructured hospitals seeing long waiting lists for diagnosis and treatment.
While many sufferers are unaware that they have sleep apnoea until their sleeping partner alerts them to it, smart watches and sleep-tracking devices now help to flag the disorder. This is important as the condition can lead to serious health risks such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart failure if left unchecked.
If you think you might have sleep apnoea, don’t miss our report in this week’s BT Lifestyle as doctors and a patient tell us more about the condition and how continuous positive airway pressure therapy – a non-surgical treatment – could be the answer to your bedtime blues.
