Behind The Vatican

After Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, Oscar buzz continues to sizzle on your TV with Netflix's latest contender, The Two Popes. Directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and written by Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody), the fly-on-the-wall Vatican drama lays bare the polar opposite personalities of Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) and his successor Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce). While the former is a stickler for tradition, the latter loves ABBA and football as much he worships the Almighty. Part buddy comedy and part biopic, The Two Popes is proof that God works in mysterious ways, especially when it comes to picking the one to lead His church. Both Hopkins and Pryce deliver a masterclass in acting and are tipped to lead the best actor and best supporting actor categories in the coming months.
