The Singapore International Festival of Arts opens next Thursday with a stage adaptation of George Orwell's classic novel 1984. Published in 1949, Orwell imagines a world run by an authoritarian government which leads its people to believe they're in a perpetual war so it can control them through mass surveillance and suppression of information.

This stage adaptation is scripted by playwrights Robert Icke and Duncan McMillan and produced by innovative UK theatre company Headlong. Having premiered in the United Kingdom in 2014, it has drawn mostly raves from critics and audiences for its sharp and concise retelling of the tale, brilliant use of multimedia and strong performances by the lead cast. With authoritarian rulers and parties around the world now seeking to cement their power and control the Internet, Orwell's novel has never been more relevant.

1984 runs from April 26 to 29 at the Esplanade Theatre. Tickets from Sistic.
