WITH THEIR DARK timber beams and whitewashed walls, black and white houses are a throwback to Singapore's past, when they were built to house British military personnel.
Found in areas such as Alexandra, Rochester, Dempsey, Seletar, Sembawang and Changi, some of these houses are now rented out as homes. Others have been converted into restaurant spaces.
Over in Sembawang, 137 Queen's Avenue is currently home to the Tzu Chi Daai Gallery, run by the Tzu Chi Foundation. The globally-recognised NGO was started in Taiwan, but has had a branch in Singapore since 1993.
