With their large size and vibrant colours, dahlias are seen as auspicious flowers for Chinese New Year, as they bring to mind da ji da li, which convey wishes of good luck and wealth. Head to the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay to see the Dahlia Dreams floral display featuring 5,000 blooms of more than 100 varieties, some with flowers as large as a person's face. The flowers are part of a special display that includes a Chinese garden landscape framed by elegant pavilions, rotating water wheels and an impressive 35m long archway of red lanterns.
Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the Senrinzaki or "Thousand Blooms" chrysanthemum arrangement. Carefully cultivated over at least one year, each features 500 to 1,500 chrysanthemum flowers blooming from a single plant.
The "Dahlia Dreams" floral display runs till Feb 24 in the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay.
