BMWs have lots of lineage. The 3 and 5 Series cars have each been around for seven generations, for instance, and every succeeding model has a lot to live up to. But the 8 Series? It started out in 1990 but is now only into its second generation.
That's because between 1999 and 2018, an 8 Series BMW simply didn't exist. The first-generation 8 Series came out as a plush, two-door grand touring coupe with a big V12 engine, but since it was a niche model with limited sales, BMW simply stopped making it after a decade.
