ABOUT FIVE YEARS ago, when Yong Wee-Loon, 57, was going through a personal crisis, he decided to pick up the paintbrush as a way of channelling his emotions. Very quickly, he became fluent in the language of paint and colour, creating highly evocative images filled with mood and detail. In 2017, he scooped the silver award in the UOB Painting of the Year (Emerging Artist Category) for a fine painting of an old woman sleeping in a back alley in Shanghai.
Mr Yong says: "I don't know how I was able to pick up painting so quickly - perhaps it's in my genes. My grandfather is Yong Mun Sen, one of the pioneer watercolour artists of Malaysia. He died when I was born, so I never met him. But for a long time, I would look at his artworks and feel great admiration."
