IF YOU’RE ON THE HUNT for a gift of jewellery that’s understated, yet distinct in its visual identity, then you’re in luck.

Recently launched in time for the festive season, Le Damier de Louis Vuitton is the French luxury brand’s first fine jewellery collection dedicated to its iconic Damier motif. And we dare say, it looks poised to become cherished jewellery for everyday wear.

But first, some history on the emblematic checkerboard design, which debuted in 1888. It was the result of Louis Vuitton and his son Georges Vuitton’s desire to create a distinguishing marker that would differentiate the maison from the competition.

Inspired by the three number eights of its birth year, the Damier pattern conveys infinity and eternity, and went on to adorn trunks and luggage as a strong and enduring code. With Le Damier de Louis Vuitton, this symbol of originality and authenticity has now been re-interpreted as yellow or white gold squares alternating with diamonds on either side of a geometric central line.

Fresh and graphic, polished and sensual, each piece in the 12-strong, unisex collection wears like a soft, second skin, thanks to their unique fluidity and continuity.

The standout piece is undoubtedly the ring, whose pure and dynamic energy carries the contemporary and impactful aura of the entire collection. Available in three different widths and two distinct styles, the possibilities for stacking, layering and styling are endless.

You have an elegant, everyday version that features two glistening rows of gold and diamonds, and a more graphic design set across four rows of gold and diamonds. Pared down or striking, the options are as versatile as you want them to be.

Another absolute star in the collection is the bracelet, which is a splendid reinterpretation of the classic tennis bracelet. Not only is this supple piece crafted for maximum fluidity and tactility – it encircles the wrist in a soft, comfortable embrace – it is also a stylish combination of both the maison’s legacy and its inspired take on a quintessential item of casual luxury.

Other pieces in the collection include a chic, single round pendant studded with diamonds and hanging from a slim, yellow gold chain, and a sophisticated, sculpted pair of diamond-set yellow gold hoop earrings.

“Le Damier de Louis Vuitton is the creation of a new era, a modern collection designed to last forever,” says Francesca Amfitheatrof, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director for watches and jewellery.

    We couldn’t agree more.

A piece from the collection makes for the perfect Christmas present, or for that matter, a gift for any time at all.
