    Parachilna – Oiphorique

In describing the kinetic Oiphorique lamp on its website, design studio Atelier Oi lists the words: “dancing, scenography, installation, material manipulation, moving, textile, expansion, light, breathing, sculptural”. All these point to a product that is more than a lamp. Designed for Parachilna, its textile diffusers press and push like an accordion when switched on. Available from Xtra.

    Price: S$11,400 (185 cm), S$12,200 (245 cm)

Catellani & Smith – Gold Moon

Produced by Catellani & Smith, Gold Moon is designed to mimic a cascade of falling light. Irregular discs suspended from a satin steel base by thin cables are layered with thin gold-coloured leaves. A copper curl loops from each lamp, housing a small gem of glass that embeds discreet LED lights. Gold Moon’s height and size can be customised. Available from Royal Interiors.

    Price: S$5,800 to S$8,500

Christian & Jade – Smoke Cloud Chandelier

Singaporean Jade Chan and Christian Hammer Juhl from Denmark met while studying at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Now based in Copenhagen, they approach materials like scientists, dissecting and exploring inherent qualities and possibilities. One of their designs is the Smoke Cloud Chandelier – a hammer-formed structure with hollows for oil lamps. There is also an electrical version available. Order from christianandjade.com

    Price: 6,500 euros (S$9,490)

    David Pompa – Meta Parallel

Metal and stone have opposing qualities – light versus weight, industrial versus organic. The Meta Parallel suspension pendant melds them into abstract versions of traditional candle chandeliers. Choose from combinations of black powder-coated aluminium with dark volcanic rock, white powder-coated aluminium with Fiorito stone, or polished brass with Fiorito stone. Available from Made & Make.

    Price: Available upon request

    Anna Karlin – Findings

The creations of British-born, New York-based designer Anna Karlin are like sculptures. For example, Findings is a pendant with a constellation of lit forms hanging from a bronze patinated metal armature. Comprising a cylinder, a hand-blown glass orb and a glass teardrop within a perforated metal shade, these elements perform a quiet dialogue within the space they inhabit. Order from annakarlin.com

    Price: US$14,500

    Lzf – Voliere

Designed by Bodo Sperlein, the Voliere lamp from Lzf reinterprets the classic 1920s Art Deco French chandelier, with layered wood veneer elements arranged in the manner of feathery plumes. The timber elements come from certified forests, and are made using a sustainable technique called Timberlit that avoids the use of harmful chemicals. Available from Million Lighting.

    Price: S$19,053

    Lasvit – Herbarium

What if you could freeze time? In making its Herbarium light, Lasvit pours molten Bohemian glass over native plants sourced from the meadows and woodlands near the Czech Republic lighting company’s headquarters in Novy Bor. Once ablaze, the flora turns to ash, leaving behind fossil-like imprints. One can choose to use personal plants – from a wedding bouquet or home garden, for instance – and have the imprints handpainted gold.

    Price: From US$9,900 to US$44,900

    Verpan – Fun 3DM

Designed by Verner Panton in 1964, Fun 3dm has three clusters of sea shell or stainless steel discs suspended on stainless steel chains. It has been reissued by Verpan in collaboration with Marianne Panton, the designer’s wife. Not just a captivating spectacle, the sculptural lamp is also one to be heard, with the colliding of the discs creating soft tinkering when wind passes through. Order from Verpan.com

    Price: 7,955 euros (S$11,620)

    Vibia – Wireflow

Designed by Arik Levy, the Wireflow Chandelier reinterprets the classic chandelier by tracing a profile of it in space. The graphic structure is made from black electrical cable and 4.5 watt LED light sources. Despite its large size, there is a sense of transparency with the slim components. One can choose from three forms and sizes, with the largest creating the most drama. Available at Grafunkt.

    Price: From S$21,000.
