Uncovering Raffles Sentosa’s secret to unforgettable escapes
How do hotels stand out from the rest in a competitive industry? In BT Luxe’s spotlight on the art of hospitality, veteran hotelier Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale says it’s not just about sprawling villas or breathtaking views, but about crafting experiences that touch the heart
IN THE LANDSCAPE OF ASIAN luxury hospitality, few names stand out as much as Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale. Having spent more than 35 years in the business, this Italian-born hotelier has become synonymous with excellence in the industry.
Now, as the cluster general manager of the newly opened Raffles Sentosa Singapore and Sofitel Singapore Resort & Spa, Viterale is once again poised to redefine luxury hospitality on our little red dot.
But what exactly does luxury mean in 2025? And how does a veteran like Viterale stay ahead of the curve in an industry that’s constantly evolving?
“The future of luxury hospitality is about embracing both innovation and authenticity, creating experiences that are not just memorable but transformative,” he suggests. It is a perspective distilled from active engagement with industry leaders, attendance at key trade shows, and inspiration sought from sectors beyond hospitality.
“However, the most valuable insights come from listening – whether to our guests, colleagues, or partners – gaining a deep understanding of their expectations and desires,” he adds.
It’s this philosophy that Viterale has brought to Raffles Sentosa, which opened its doors on Mar 1, 2025. As Singapore’s first all-villa resort, it represents a spirited new chapter for the storied Raffles brand, which has been a byword for luxury since its founding in 1887.

“As Singapore’s only all-villa resort, Raffles Sentosa Singapore offers guests unmatched space and seclusion, with villas starting at 211 sqm,” Viterale says proudly. “The expansive villas are not only luxurious but are also oriented to maximise privacy and provide stunning views of the island’s landscape.”
Set in 100,000 sqm of lush greenery, the Yabu Pushelberg-designed resort offers 62 spacious private villas, each with its own pool and terrace. It’s a world apart from the old world grandeur of the original Raffles, but it speaks to a growing trend in luxury travel: The desire for space, privacy, and a connection to nature.
“We are seeing a shift towards guests prioritising space and wellness – factors that are integral to our offerings,” explains Viterale. “Our expansive villas and nature-centric experiences are designed to meet those needs.”
The connection to nature is what sets the property apart, Viterale said.
“The resort offers 360-degree views of Sentosa’s natural beauty, and the design blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.”
Wellness at the resort, too, focuses on balancing the mind, body, and soul. The spa offers a holistic lineup, from mindfulness exercises and rejuvenating massages to fitness sessions and hydrotherapy. Personalisation is key, with tools like Dr Burgener’s Beauty Analyser helping the Wellbeing Butler tailor each experience to fit individual wellness needs.
More than a stay – a memory in the making
Yet, for all its innovation, Raffles Sentosa remains dedicated to preserving the integrity of the brand’s 138-year legacy. “From the moment guests arrive, we ensure that every interaction reflects this commitment – whether through our legendary Raffles Butlers or the classic Afternoon Tea ritual,” Viterale asserts.
The Raffles Butler service is a brand cornerstone. To maintain consistency worldwide, the resort partnered with prestigious British butler school Aspire Globally Limited.
Led by veteran trainer Wayne Fitzharris, who has served royalty and world leaders, Raffles Sentosa’s butler team underwent an intensive 10-day training program ahead of the resort’s opening.
Beyond luxury, Raffles Sentosa is rooted in meaningful connections and anticipating guests’ needs before they arise – because people remember people, not the colour of the chandeliers, Viterale once quipped.
The pursuit of service excellence is what has driven Viterale throughout his career. “Throughout my over-35 years in hospitality, I’ve learned the importance of being adaptable and attuned to the evolving expectations of both guests and the industry,” he reflects.
Early on, he focused on the operational side of things, honing his understanding of service excellence in renowned hotels across Europe and Asia. This foundational experience taught him the significance of cultural sensitivity and how to cater to diverse guest preferences.
Viterale’s leadership philosophy has evolved over the years. “As I advanced in my career, I shifted my leadership strategy to be more focused on empowerment and collaboration,” he explains. “Leadership, in my view, is not just about directing others; it’s about creating an environment where every team member feels motivated and valued.”
This approach has served him well at Raffles Sentosa, where he is fostering a leadership style that prioritises authenticity, respect, and empowerment. “My role is to inspire my team, ensuring that they have a clear sense of purpose and understand how their contributions help shape the guest experience.”
As the luxury hospitality market continues to grow – it’s projected to reach US$218 billion by 2029, according to Paris-based hospitality management school Luxury Hotelschool – properties like Raffles Sentosa are poised to lead the way.
By offering a unique blend of privacy, nature, and world-class service, the resort is catering to a new generation of luxury travellers who value experiences over mere excess. This approach is deeply intertwined with a focus on sustainability, starting with the property’s location on Sentosa – Asia’s first Global Sustainable Tourism Council certified destination.
Beyond its eco-conscious setting, the resort integrates sustainable design features that exceed Singapore’s green building standards. From bespoke crystal LED chandeliers inspired by the national flower – Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim – to expansive green spaces that foster biodiversity, every detail reflects a balance between luxury and responsibility.
Innovative technologies, such as smart air-conditioning systems that conserve energy by adjusting to guests’ movements, further underscore Raffles Sentosa’s mission to create meaningful, memorable stays with minimal environmental impact.
“The future of luxury travel is defined by a strong commitment to sustainability, an emphasis on well-being, and a desire for personalised, authentic experiences,” Viterale observes. “Guests today are more discerning than ever, seeking not only luxury but also experiences that align with their values.”
