THE exhibition comprises 16 portraits of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, but they are not what you might call straightforward depictions of Singapore's founding father.

In some pieces, Mr Lee appears kind, paternal and protective; in others, he appears stern, even combative. The contrast is particularly obvious in a series of portraits that depict Mr Lee with his finger pointed upwards or towards the viewer. Depending on his expression, he could be dispensing advice or squaring off against an opponent.

The dilute paint that's allowed to run down the canvas create a deliberate sense of "untidiness" and enigma to the portraits, which appear never complete or perfect.
