HE was famed for being the long-time music director of the National Day Parade and music arranger for Asia's top singers including Sandy Lam, Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Dick Lee and Anita Sarawak.
Less feted but no less extraordinary, however, was his tireless promotion of child talents, partly through the ChildAid charity concerts of which he was artistic director. Under his guidance, numerous young talents such as jazz singer Nathan Hartono, guitarist Kevin Loh, singer Amni Musfirah and music composer Julian Wong have flourished.
Iskandar Ismail died on Saturday of brain and lung cancer at the age of 58. He left behind his wife of three decades, Ernawaty Sorianto, and two grown children, Valerie and Emil. He was diagnosed with the disease four years ago but continued to play an active role in the nurturing of the young.
