Changing history, one trauma at a time
Helmi Yusof
THERE'S a hilarious scene in the play The Imagination Of The Future where Chilean President Salvador Allende calls up the US president on the phone and shouts expletives for about five minutes.
"Chile will not be another Iraq or Afghanistan ... F**k Hannah Montana!" screams Mr Allende.
Mr Allende, you see, believed in socialism and wanted to transform his country peacefully into a socialist state. But the US was against this and encouraged the Chilean army to overthrow Mr Allende on Sept 11, 1973. That consequently led to 17 dark years of brutal military dictatorship under General Augusto Pinochet.
