Cheong Soo Pieng (1917 - 1983) is one of Singapore's favourite artists. His distinctive drawings and paintings are among the most elegant and lyrical ever produced on these shores.

In celebration of the centenary of his birth, an extensive exhibition of his drawings and sketches is now on at Artspace@Helutrans till July 22. On display are about 100 drawings and 40 paintings spanning his career, assembled from private collections.

Together, they illustrate the evolution of Cheong's style in depicting his most iconic subjects, such as women and landscapes. They also illuminate his approaches to abstraction in a local context.
