Is Chinese tea the new coffee?
FOR those who’ve been turned away at green tea shops in Japan ever since viral TikTok videos sparked a global shortage of matcha, it’s time to switch to Chinese tea. In Singapore, artisanal Chinese tea is enjoying growing momentum as new and modern tea houses sprout up to cater to changing lifestyles that prioritise experiences over luxury goods.
In this week’s BT Lifestyle, we look at how younger, affluent consumers are seeking premium, immersive experiences, much like they did with third-wave coffee and artisanal cocktails. Tea houses boast sleek, minimalist interiors, while connoisseurs sip on everything from Fujian teas to Wuyi rock-essence tea priced as much as S$200 a box.
In Design, head to the future as we visit a house with futuristic curves and a prime location right next to MacRitchie forest. Speaking of the future, the ArtScience Museum pays tribute to fashion icon Iris van Herpen, with an exhibition of 140 dresses that combine art, science and cutting-edge technology. In Arts, immersive experiences take centre stage at the new IMBA (Immersive Media Based Arts) theatre at Gardens by the Bay. Let’s see what’s happening there.
And in Dining, we go back to China, or at least Imperial Treasures’ new restaurant, which celebrates the cuisine of Huaiyang. For all this and more, don’t miss this week’s BT Lifestyle.
