Classic theatre
How do the mentally-ill fall in love? The question was bravely tackled by theatre company The Necessary Stage 26 years ago. And the result was Off Centre, a play so heartbreaking honest that nearly every show leaves audiences completely devastated by the time the lights come up. The play has rightly become a classic Singapore text, studied by thousands of students for the O-levels.
Running for two hours without intermission, Off Centre depicts the struggles of a pair of mentally-ill lovers trying to make sense of their place in the world. But at its most potent, it transcends its concern for the mentally-ill to address discrimination faced by any minority group - be it sexual, social, racial, religious or political.
Written by Haresh Sharma and directed by Alvin Tan, this revival of Off Centre is particularly historic because it features the original 1993 main cast of Abdulattif Abdullah as Vinod, Sakinah Dollah as Saloma, and Aidli Mosbit as the mother.
