Comfort Food
Jaime Ee
That the crowds have been at the door of Mui Kee Congee since its first day goes to show that you can't beat the combination of good value and comfort food like smooth, velvety-textured Cantonese porridge with crispy yu tiao dunked into it. At S$7.80 for a large bowl of classic century egg and pork porridge or a more esoteric liver and intestine version, it's a no-brainer choice. If you like liver, it's cooked to a perfect texture here. A slight extravagance is the threadfin belly porridge (S$18) but you get thick slices of prized fish belly meat that's firm and resilient. Another must-try would be the braised beef brisket, either with noodles (S$12.80) or in a claypot (S$18) with its generous chunks of simmered tendon and fork tender beef in a thick, rich gravy.
Mui Kee Congee is at #01-12 Shaw Centre. Tel: 6737 2422.
